James McNaught was born 11 July 1894 in Girard, Kansas and died 7 August 1959 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He received his AB from University of Kansas in 1916 and his AM (Botany) from University of Kansas in 1917 and completed his MD Stanford University in 1931. His definitive appointment was Professor and Head of Pathology University of Colorado Medical School from 1945-59.
At one time or another he was a member of 40 professional medical societies and served terms as President of
the following - International Association of Medical Museums American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Board of Pathology and the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists. As well, he was consultant
to the Atomic Energy Commission for the Surgeon General of the US Air Force. It is interesting from a historical view point to note the work load of a pathologist applying for specialist certification by the American Board of Pathology in 1936. In his application, McNaught said that he had performed 650 necropsies, 4470 surgical pathology reports and had done some research.
