Edward Byron Smith was born in Petersburg, Indiana and died 30 October 1983 in Inverness, Florida.
He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana receiving his BS in 1936 and his MD in 1938.

- 1971-1977 Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida.
He played a major role in shaping the American Board of Pathology, and made important contributions to the AFIP.
Among his research interests was electron microscopy of neoplasms. He was co-author of the major textbook in Pathology
– ‘The Principles of Pathology’, published 1959. An energetic and respected teacher and colleague, he often escaped to the woodland and lakes for hiking and fishing.
