Lowell Orbison graduated from Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois in 1944. From 1955-1979 he worked in the Department of Pathology, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York as Professor and Chairman of the Department and then as Director of the Rochester Medical Center and Dean, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He had wide medical interests and botanical interests as well. He was a good teacher and knew each student in medical school by name and keenly developed the art of dialogue with the students. Lowell was a member of the Intersociety Committee for Research Potential in Pathology and Chairman, Pathology training committee of the National Institutes of Health (1963-1966.) The ‘Stowell-Orbison Award’ was named in his honor for having stimulated research and created a forum for young pathologists at IAP meetings.
