Philip Wesley Allen

IAP President 1994-1996

Phil was born in London, United Kingdom and graduated in Medicine from the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1960. His postgraduate training was done in Adelaide. After gaining the specialist qualification FRCPA, he spent 2 years at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, USA in the Soft Tissue section under Franz M Enzinger. This gave him his lifelong interest in soft tissue tumours, for which he developed an enviable reputation in Australia and Internationally.

Professional:

- 1970 - 1976 Pathologist, Deputy Director then Chairman of the Histopathology Division at the Adelaide Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS)

- 1976 - 1984 Director of the IMVS Mt. Gambier Laboratory.

- 1984 - 1994 Director of Histopathology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide.

- 1989 - 1998 Visiting Scholar then Professor of Pathology Chinese University of Hong Kong.

- 1997 - 1998 Visiting Professor, Nanjing Medical University, China.

- 1998 – to the present, Associate Professor of Pathology Flinders Medical Centre, South Australia.

Administrative:

- Founding Member of the Australasian Division of the IAP, and South Australian State Councillor for the Division from its inauguration in 1973-1981.

- President of the Australasian Division (1983-1985).

- During his time on the IAP Executive, he noted that the US-Canadian Division of the IAP was not an incorporated body, which on legal advice resulted in the formation of the USCAP as it is today.

- Instrumental in the establishment of the Hong Kong and the Chinese Divisions of the IAP and was involved, along with the Congress President, Professor Joseph C K Lee, in the IAP Meeting in Hong Kong (1994).

- Updated and expanded the IAP handbook to include the late Kenny Earle’s review of the first 75 years of the Academy.

- Treasurer of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (2001-2005).
