Richard was born in Montreal, Canada in 1874. Following his medical studies at Tufts, he trained in pathology with Frank B. Mallory at Boston City Hospital and worked at various Institutions in pathology, research and education.

Of particular interest was the study of immunologic diseases of liver, kidney and spleen. He was one of the founders of the IAMM. In 1913, with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, he founded the American Society for Experimental Pathology. From 1919-30 he was Director of the Division of Medical Education of the Rockefeller Foundation and during this time travelled widely and dispensed millions of Rockefeller dollars. In one of these assignments he spent a year in residence at Peking Union Medical College. He had a talent for sensing the most opportune methods of achieving his ideals and worked tirelessly in achieving them. He worked until the day before his death in 1930.
