Alfred’s initial interest was in music, studying at the Cincinnati Conservatory. He later undertook medical studies and was awarded his MD and PhD from the University of Michigan. He served the University of Michigan for over 40
years, finally as Professor and Director of the Pathological Laboratories.
Of special interest was his study of tuberculosis of the placenta, as well as diseases of the lymphatic system. An entire generation of medical students gained greatly from his literary efforts. He was a gifted and much sought after public speaker. His name is commemorated in the Warthin Starry Stain for organisms, and in Warthin’s Tumour of the salivary glands.
