Virgil Cornell was born 29 November 1890 in Brooklyn, New York and died 3 June 1954 in Washington, D.C.

He was awarded the MD at the Long Island College of Medicine in 1913 and Honorary Dr. Public Health from Harvard University in 1943. He had a distinguished military career. From 1933-35 he was Curator of the Army Medical Museum during which time he was instrumental in modernizing many of the exhibits. From 1950-54 he was appointed Professor of Pathology at the George Washington Medical School, and set up a private practice of pathology in Washington DC and Alexandria, Virginia.

[This is a mention of the private practice of pathology which was just beginning to be an important part of the practice of pathology and became progressively more important in the next 50 years. Ed.]
