Samuel Haythorn was born10 September 1880 in Danville, Illinois and died 6 December 1949.
He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1904 and trained at University of Michigan (with AS Warthin); Boston City Hospital; Harvard (with W.T. Councilman and F.B. Mallory); University of Pittsburgh (with Oskar Klotz); University of Leipzig (with Felix Marchand) before moving to Pittsburgh in 1910 and ultimately became Professor and Head of Pathology and Bacteriology, University of Pittsburgh from 1921 until his death in 1949. Living in the highly industrialized city of Pittsburgh which at that time was the most smoke polluted city in the US, he was acutely aware of the effects of air pollutants on the human lung. His investigations on this subject led to many important publications on the pneumoconioses – anthracosis and silicosis. His nonmedical interests included amateur plays and music.
