William Ogburn Russel was born in 1910 in San Jose, California and died 2 August 1997 in Houston, Texas.
He received his AB in 1933 and his MD in 1937 from Stanford University, Stanford, California and then trained at the Mallory Institute in Boston Massachusetts.
William Russell accepted positions in Washington, Houston and Fort Lauderdale.
From 1948-1977 he was Professor and the first Chairman of Pathology, at the M.D. Anderson Hospital, Houston,
Texas. In 1957 he was instrumental in adapting the cryostat technique to make cold chamber frozen sections and under his direction; a new cryostat model was designed and constructed. He introduced the membrane filter technique in cytopathology, and he was a member (with Enzinger and Hajdu) of the Soft Tissue Sarcoma Task Force of the American Joint Committee for Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting.
