A James French was born in Raton, New Mexico on September 03, 1912 and died on March 01, 1985 at the age of 72 in in Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
James French studied at the University of Colorado, Denver, receiving his MD and MS in 1936. He joined the United States Army in 1936, rising to Lieutenant Colonel in 1945. He spent the main part of his professional life from 1941-1980 as Professor, and later Chairman of the Department of Pathology the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, he built the Department from 6 to 50 faculty positions. He held a number of senior positions on the American Board of Pathology from 1961-1979 and was President of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists (1975-76). In 1973 he was awarded Pathologist of the Year from the CAP (College of American Pathologists) and Distinguished Service Pathology Award from the ASCAP/CAP in 1977.
