Edward A. Gall

1906-1979

IAP President 1969-1970

Edward A. Gall was born 10 June in New York, New York and died 31 January 1979 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ed Gall graduated MD from the Tulane University, New Orleans in 1931. He did his pathology training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and took up his definitive professional position at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1940. He held a number of positions there (including Professor and Chair of Pathology) until retirement in 1974. From 1971-1974 he was the first vice-president for Medical Affairs, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Upon his retirement in 1974 he was named a Distinguished Service Professor, one of only four in the history of the University of Cincinnati. Author of numerous scientific publications, his studies on diseases of the liver and lymph nodes were landmarks/classics of his generation. The Gall and Mallory classification of malignant lymphomas commemorates his studies on haematopathology and he was Co-Editor (with F.K.Mostofi) of “The Liver by 34 Authors” an IAP Monograph (1973). He loved to tell an anecdote of how he became a pathologist. In 1935 when he was working as a district physician at the Boston Dispensary, he happened to be on a double date with Ben Castleman, Ben asked him whether he knew anyone interested in a pathology residency (because he was just finishing his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital.) The cryptic reply by Gall was ‘How much does it pay?’ ‘Five hundred dollars per year’ was the reply. A few days later Ed applied and got the job.
