Jack Malcolm Layton

IAP President 1984-1986

Jack Layton graduated MD from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, Iowa in 1943. After his post graduate training he took up his permanent position from 1967-1991 as Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, University of Arizona and Director of Clinical Pathology, University Hospital, Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, Arizona.

Jack was President of several associations including The American Society of Clinical Pathologists (1973); the Association of Pathology Chairmen (1973); and the American Board of Pathology. He was appointed by the

President of the United States to the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine in 1969 and from 1972-73 he was Chairman of this Board. He was USCAP Delegate to the American Medical Association and Chair, ad hoc committee of the IAP whose recommendations on reorganization and the establishment of a full time Secretariat were accepted by the USCAP membership. Jack was Vice President and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the IAP for many years. He was an extremely approachable person and was a ready source of advice and information on the workings of American Pathology.
